For a spicier kick, increase the amount of ground ginger to 3 teaspoons. You can also add a tablespoon of finely chopped crystallized ginger for texture. If you can’t find black treacle, molasses is a good substitute, and for golden syrup, honey or light corn syrup will work in a pinch. For a gluten-free version, use a gluten-free all-purpose flour blend.
