Welcome to the world of Oklahoma Fried Onion Burgers, a delightful and flavorful creation that has become a true local legend. Picture this: a juicy beef patty topped with a mountain of caramelized onions, all sandwiched between soft buns. But what sets this burger apart from the rest?
Well, it’s all in the name. Legend has it that back in the 1920s, during the Great Depression, a clever Oklahoma cook named Ross Davis came up with a brilliant idea to stretch the limited meat supply and add extra flavor to his burgers. By piling heaps of thinly sliced onions directly onto the patty, he created a delicious and affordable masterpiece. The onions cooked and caramelized beautifully, infusing the meat with their sweet and savory essence. And just like that, the Oklahoma Fried Onion Burger was born, satisfying hungry folks and gaining a well-deserved reputation as a local favorite.

    Ingredients:
    1 ½ pounds ground beef (80% lean)
    1 large onion, thinly sliced
    Salt and pepper to taste
    4 hamburger buns
    Condiments (ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, etc.)
    Cheese slices (optional)
Pickles, lettuce, tomatoes, and other toppings of your choice
Pro Tip: If you like the “Big Mac” taste, you can also try this with some Thousand Island Dressing.
    Instructions:
    1. Divide the ground beef into four equal portions and shape them into 3 oz balls.
    2. Preheat a large skillet over medium-high heat.
    3. Place the balls of beef onto the preheated skillet or griddle. Use an offset spatula to press down on each ball, flattening the meat as much as possible.
Use the flat-edge of a second spatula to press the first spatula down, ensuring the meat is flattened evenly. Season the beef patties liberally with salt and pepper.
    4. Quickly arrange the thinly sliced onions evenly over the patties on the skillet or griddle. Press down with the spatula to embed the onions into the meat.
    5. Let the burgers cook undisturbed until they are well-browned, which should take about 2 minutes. The recommended internal temperature for a medium-rare hamburger is around 130-135°F (54-57°C).
    6. Carefully flip the burgers over so that the onions are now on the bottom. Let them cook for about 1 minute, allowing the onions to start to soften.
    7. If you prefer, top the patties with cheese slices and wait until cheese is melted.
    8. At the same time, toast the hamburger buns until they become slightly crispy.
