- 1 pound ground beef (80/20 lean to fat ratio)
- 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup finely chopped onions
- 1 egg
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Prepare the Ground Beef Mixture:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, finely chopped onions, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
- Use your hands to gently mix the ingredients until they’re well combined. Be careful not to overwork the meat mixture, as it can result in tough steaks.
- Forming the Patties:
- Divide the mixture into equal portions and shape them into oval-shaped patties, about 3/4 to 1 inch thick. Make an indentation in the center of each patty with your thumb to prevent bulging while cooking.
- Cooking the Hamburger Steaks:
- Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat.
- Once the oil is hot, carefully add the patties to the skillet. Cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side or until they’re nicely browned and cooked through. Adjust the cooking time based on your preferred level of doneness. Remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside.
- Prepare the Roux:
- In the same skillet used to cook the patties, melt butter over medium heat. Add flour to the melted butter, stirring constantly to create a roux. Cook the roux for a few minutes until it turns a light golden brown color.
- Adding Beef Broth:
- Slowly pour in the beef broth while continuously whisking to prevent lumps from forming. Whisk until the mixture is smooth and well combined with the roux.
- Seasoning and Simmering:
- Add Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper to the gravy, adjusting the seasoning to your taste. Stir well to incorporate the flavors.
- Allow the gravy to simmer for about 5-7 minutes, or until it thickens to your desired consistency. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
- Once the gravy reaches your preferred thickness, return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, spooning some of the gravy over them.
- Allow the steaks to simmer in the gravy for a couple of minutes to absorb the flavors.
- Serve the hamburger steaks hot, topped with the rich brown gravy. They pair wonderfully with mashed potatoes, rice, or steamed vegetables.
